Press Release No. : 20/2016
Date : 25 August 2016
The Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) has today announced that a coloured commemorative circulation coin will be issued in early 2017 to commemorate the Fiji Rugby Sevens team’s magnificent Gold Medal win at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
RBF Governor, Barry Whiteside, said that the RBF Board of Directors had, at its July 2016 meeting, approved the minting of a coloured commemorative circulation coin in limited quantities should Fiji win a gold medal at the Rio Olympics. This will be the first coloured commemorative circulation coin for Fiji.
Design work is currently being finalised. Together with the production time, which is dependent on availability of a slot with the mint, actual completion of the coin could take around six months. It is therefore expected that this coloured commemorative circulation coin will be issued in the first quarter of 2017.
Mr Whiteside mentioned that only a limited quantity of this coloured commemorative circulation coin will be minted, which means that it would fast become a collector’s item for the general public. The RBF will announce further details closer to the date of issuance.
In 2013, the RBF had issued a non-coloured commemorative 50 cents circulation coin commemorating Mr Iliesa Delana’s historic F 42 category high jump Gold Medal win at the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games in London, England.
